Originally hailing from Canada by way of Australia, Dean Dixon’s DJ style espouses diversity. he wholeheartedly believes there’s great music in every genre and that you simply require the passion to dedicate time and patience towards laying your fingers on it. He receives implicit joy in sharing his worldly treasures with others and loves providing these glorious sonic surprises to listeners where one can expect the unexpected and should prepare themselves for anything from old school Hip Hop to Techno and everything in between. Deep at times, uplifting at others, straight down the line and yet veering left of center with every opportunity. He lists the Scottish duo Optimo at the top of his strongest musical influences in sound provision so you can be sure he’ll take you right where you need to go, without knowing in advance just where that is.
Alongside Dave Fernandes as D&D, together the duo forged a musical pathway down the side streets, forgotten laneways and dark warehouse spaces that made up the more unique aspects of the Sydney late night party scene over the last decade and then some. As co–hosts and as stand–alone players in support they’ve deftly warmed the floors alongside some of the world’s most formidable folk in music including; Detroit Techno icon Juan Atkins (Metroplex, Model 500), Optimo (Optimo Music) and radio don Tim Sweeney of Beats In Space fame. The duo have taken dancers on true musical journeys in many of Australia’s most influential venues, warehouse spaces, parties and festivals including; Revolver, Good God, Mandarin Club, Marrickville Bowling Club, House of Mince, Mad Racket, Burning Seed, Subsonic Music Festival, Sydney Fringe Festival and Pause Festival to name but a few. Throughout this time they’ve also been periodicially hypnotising listners on stations like FBI Radio, 2SER, Bondi FM and Street FM (Kiss FM).
As a founding member of HAHA Industries, one of Sydney’s premiere, long-running, underground electronic music event and touring crews, Dean was key to introducing Australian dance floors to many once unknown, now pivotal players including, Hunee (Rush Hour, Future Times), Auntie Flo (Huntley’s & Palmers, Let’s Get Lost) and Glimpse AKA-Dense & Pika (Drumcode , Hotflush, Hypercolor), amongst many others.
As a sole player, he is a true force for playing music that will move you and his music selections are vast and varied, creating special moments in sound each time he takes to the wheels. Testament to his passionately dusty fingers and deep record bags, over the past decade in Sydney alone, Dean has dropped old school hip hop while Doze Green of The Rock Steady Crew painted a mural on a Paddington gallery wall and he’s thrown down funky, bass-heavy techno in support of Robert Hood (UR, M Plant, AXIS, Tresor). He’s spun deep, soulful Detroit vibes alongside Chez Damier (Prescription, KMS) in a dark inner city basement club and dropped World Music, Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Boogie and more at a festival after-party featuring Giles Peterson (Brownswood Recordings, INCredible records). Amongst all of this he’s been moving dancers routinely with his eclectically curated selections of well-aged Disco, No Wave and beyond whilst supporting the likes of Sal P (Liquid Liquid) or the Sex Tags Mania boys (DJ Fett Burger & DJ Sotofett) for example.
Dean has recently hopped across the ocean again to take on a DJ residency at the world-renowned Potato Head Beach Club in Bali, Indonesia and has hit the ground running. He’s been caught dropping sounds alongside Rudimental (Atlantic Records) at the beach clubs legendary NYE party and been found supporting the likes of Jackmaster (Numbers) and Young Marco (ESP Institute, Rush Hour, Music from Memory), amongst other key international guests during their brief artist in spotlight residencies at the beach club.
Dean’s endless passion to find the weird and wonderful and share it with others creates magic on each and every dance floor he greets.
